Dale Whitfield
Former fleet safety coordinator and trucking compliance writer
Nashville, Tennessee
Background
Dale Whitfield spent twelve years working in trucking operations before transitioning to writing about compliance documentation. He started as a dispatcher at a small flatbed carrier in Middle Tennessee, where driver qualification files and DVIR paperwork were administrative tasks that nobody had explained systematically. That gap became his focus.
He moved into a full-time safety coordinator role after the carrier received its first FMCSA new entrant safety audit notice with about two weeks to prepare. The scramble to gather DQ files, pull HOS records, track down maintenance invoices by unit number, and get a drug testing packet together became the direct source of the checklists and reference pages on this site.
Over the following decade he worked as a safety coordinator and later safety manager at carriers operating between six and twenty power units — primarily dry van and flatbed — across Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, and Indiana. He helped prepare records for four FMCSA new entrant safety audits, two compliance reviews, and several remote document request responses during that period.
He built internal DQ file templates, unit-based maintenance folder systems, ELD transfer test procedures, and drug testing provider coordination packets for carriers that had no formal recordkeeping process when he arrived. Most of the common gaps listed on these pages came directly from audit findings or pre-audit reviews he ran himself.
Dale is not a lawyer, insurance professional, FMCSA representative, or certified compliance consultant. Content on this site is educational reference material based on firsthand operational experience and official regulatory sources. It is not legal, insurance, or compliance advice for any specific operation.
